Application Procedures  *

Who should apply using the OUAC 101 application?

Applicants should use the OUAC 101 application if:

  • they are taking courses during the day at an Ontario secondary school (this includes students returning for second semester and graduated students returning to upgrade one or more courses);
  • they will have received or expect to receive their OSSD with six 4U/M courses at the end of the current year;
  • they have not completed one year or more of postsecondary education; and
  • they are applying to a diploma program or a first-year degree program at an Ontario university.

If applicants do not satisfy the above criteria, they should contact their guidance counsellor or the OUAC. Depending on their academic background, some applicants may need to use a different application.

Ontario applicants who are currently enrolled in an Ontario secondary school day program and have one year or more of postsecondary education must use the 105D online application. Applicants should consult with their secondary school guidance counsellor to obtain the appropriate application.

Note: Only one application is required for any entry point in the year 2010. If the applicant is changing their entry point (e.g., winter to fall), they only need to amend their original application.

Getting Started  *

Applicants need to identify the universities and programs to which they wish to apply. Research is important. There are many publications and resources available. Before applying, applicants should:

  • Visit eINFO: the comprehensive guide to Ontario universities for secondary school students at www.electronicinfo.ca.
  • Read the admission handbooks, guidebooks, viewbooks and calendars available directly from each university.
  • Attend the University Information Program (UIP) sessions this fall (see the schedule at www.ouf.ca/uip/).
  • Visit the universities. At the very least, applicants should have a look at the universities' websites.
  • Most importantly, applicants should discuss their interests and goals with their parents, teachers and guidance counsellors.

For the most up-to-date information, applicants should visit www.ouac.on.ca/101/ or use the individual university information pages in the application booklet to look up the program codes for the university programs to which they will be applying. Applicants should write these codes down and keep the list handy when they log in to the OUAC 101 application.

Applicants should obtain their confidential OUAC Access Letter from their guidance counsellors. Schools will notify students in late October or early November when these letters are available. The letter will provide applicants with their School Number, Student Number and Personal Identification Number (PIN), all three of which are required in order to log in to the OUAC 101 application.

Applicants should have their MasterCard, VISA or American Express information handy if they plan to pay the application fees online: card number, expiry date and cardholder’s name will be required.

Alternatively, applicants may pay using internet or telephone bill payment services, or by cheque or money order. See Summary of Fees for details.

Applicants must complete the online application and pay the applicable fees by the stipulated deadline dates.

Scholarships and Financial Aid *

Ontario secondary school students can take advantage of a variety of scholarships available at all Ontario universities. The Ontario Government also has a financial aid program to assist students in need of funding in order to pursue a university education. Some university scholarships are available for applicants entering their first year of study and some are renewable for additional years if they satisfy certain conditions. Be sure to accept offers of scholarships by the stipulated reply deadline.

In addition to the scholarship programs of the universities and the government student assistance programs, several large corporations across the country offer scholarships to the children of full-time employees. Applicants should ask their parents to inquire about whether their employer has a scholarship or a bursary program.

The applicant's guidance counsellor and the university financial aid offices can provide them with further information.

Applicants applying for the "Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top" scholarship program should remember that they must apply for the scholarship by filling out the 2010 OSAP application when it becomes available next spring. Applicants should visit the OSAP website to ensure they meet all applicable deadlines.

After Applying

After Submitting an Application *

Immediately after applicants submit their OUAC 101 application, a screen displaying their OUAC Reference Number will appear. This 11-digit number is a unique identifier and will be required whenever applicants communicate with the OUAC or the universities. Applicants should make note of this number (in writing or by printing the screen) and keep it in a safe place.

Using their OUAC Reference Number and PIN, applicants can access their submitted application information and make any necessary changes online through the "Review and Change Your Completed Application" system. These changes can include personal information (e.g., name and address corrections) and university/program selections. Applicants will also respond to offers of admission from Ontario universities through this site.

After logging in to the "Review and Change Your Completed Application" system, applicants will be given the option of changing their PIN to a personal password.

Offers of Admission *

Applicants are able to accept (or for some universities, decline) offers of admission from the Ontario universities using the "Review and Change Your Completed Application" feature on the COMPASS.101 application website. They will require their OUAC Reference Number and COMPASS PIN/password.

Important: An online response instruction video is available at www.ouac.on.ca/101/101-tutorials.html. This video demonstrates the steps required to respond to a university offer of admission using the "Review and Change Your Completed Application" system.

Application files are evaluated individually at each university and admission decisions are made by the universities. The universities will communicate offers of admission, including terms of any conditional offers, directly to applicants.

The OUAC does not make any admission decisions, evaluate applications or receive detailed information from the university with regard to offers made to applicants. When the universities have evaluated an applicant's file, an admission decision will be mailed directly to the applicant. When applicants are offered admission, they will be provided with the appropriate instructions for responding. Applicants who choose to respond to their offer of admission online should not mail a paper response to the OUAC.

Offers are made at different times throughout the processing cycle, depending on the university and program. Applicants are responsible for meeting the deadline dates stipulated by the universities. Most universities require that responses to offers of admission be made online. When responding online, applicants must click on the "Submit" button and follow the steps in order to send their response to the OUAC. A screen displaying the applicant's confirmation number will appear immediately after successfully submitting a response, which will include a summary of all changes/responses made within that session. Applicants should make note of this number (in writing or by printing the screen) and keep it in a safe place. Successfully submitted responses to offers of admission will be processed within one business day. Applicants should log back in to their account to verify their response(s) after one business day.

Accepting an offer of admission from one university will not cancel applications to other universities and/or programs. However, applicants may have only one acceptance of an offer on file at a time. Before applicants can accept a subsequent offer online, they must first cancel the previously accepted offer. Note: When applicants submit a subsequent paper acceptance, the OUAC will automatically cancel the previously accepted offer.

Applicants who wish to attend a university that has offered them admission but whose response deadline has expired, or who wish to re-accept an offer they previously cancelled or declined, should contact the university's admissions office to see whether they will still be considered and, if so, whether a new offer can be issued. Remember, many university programs reach capacity. The later that applicants wish to change universities, the more difficult it is likely to be to make changes.

Applicants who are concerned about accepting or declining an offer of admission should contact the university's admissions office in order to discuss their needs. The university will try to accommodate applicants as much as possible.

Note: Please do not send any applications for residence or deposit cheques to the OUAC. These items should be sent directly to the universities. Residence deposits do not replace an official response to an offer of admission through the OUAC.

Verification of an acceptance to a university's offer of admission *

Applicants will be required to log in to the "Review and Change Your Completed Application" system, enter their OUAC Reference Number and PIN/password and click "Choices/Offers" to view the status of their accepted offer.

Contacting the Secondary School Division *

Applicants should have their OUAC Reference Number or IT number in front of them before calling or emailing the OUAC.
