Interested in pursuing an Undergraduate degree?

Postsecondary education in Ontario normally refers to academic study that is undertaken after secondary school at institutions that grant recognized academic credentials. Universities grant undergraduate degrees at the bachelor’s level and in many cases, graduate degrees at the master and doctoral level. Some of these are often referred to as professional degrees.

More specifically:

An undergraduate program is the first level of university study that normally leads to a bachelor’s degree.

A graduate program is a higher level of university study that normally requires the student to have earned a previous undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree (or the equivalent). Successful completion of a graduate program results in a masters or doctorate degree.

A professional degree is a program of advanced learning that leads to an occupation governed by an accredited professional regulatory body.  In addition to the university degree, candidates are usually working toward a professional designation. Practicing members of the profession must complete a licensing exam before they can actively practice and must keep their credentials current, through additional education mandated by the regulatory body. Examples of professional programs include medicine, law, teacher education, rehabilitation sciences, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, architecture, etc. Professional programs usually, but not always, require an undergraduate degree. Other examples of professional designations include accounting (CA; CMA; CGA) and engineering (P.Eng.).

The Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) deals with applications to undergraduate programs and certain professional programs offered by Ontario’s 20 universities. Professional programs processed by the OUAC include medicine, law, teacher education, and rehabilitation sciences.

Note: The OUAC does not process applications to the Royal Military College. For information on this institution refer to our list of Ontario universities page.

If you are interested in graduate studies at the master and doctoral levels, please refer to each university’s website for details about their graduate programs.
