Undergraduate Academic Record

The Ontario law schools receive applications from applicants who have completed their university work at universities with various grading systems. The admissions committees at the law schools attempt to give each applicant equal consideration. The OLSAS Grading System Conversion Table is used to compile applicant academic records in a uniform manner and equate the various grading systems. Only university undergraduate credit courses from Canadian and American universities are included in the OLSAS GPA. Diploma and certificate programs are not usually included.

OLSAS uses a 4.0 scale. See the OLSAS Undergraduate Grading System Conversion Table to determine the grading scale used for each university that you attended, or are attending. The law schools equate university work on the basis of the Ontario traditional academic year system. For universities operating in the semester system, two semesters are combined as the equivalent of an academic year. (i.e., semesters one and two are combined for first year; semesters three and four for second year). Co-op semesters are grouped similarly.

Each law school may use a different GPA than is calculated by OLSAS in the undergraduate academic record, based on their own admission criteria. Applicants should refer to the requirements section for each law school in the OLSAS application for more information.

Where a grading system uses both letter and percentage grades, the percentage grades are used. All courses and marks, including failures, incomplete, repeated, supplementary courses, and courses extra to degree requirements, are included in the GPA. The GPA does NOT include “challenge for credit” courses. Courses for which a specific grade is not given (e.g., a “Pass” course) are not included in the GPA.

Grades from countries other than Canada and the United States are processed as non-convertible. The application will be forwarded for evaluation to the institution(s) to which the applicant has applied.

Full courses are given a weight of 2. Half courses are given a weight of 1.

The Cumulative Average is calculated by OLSAS by adding all of the course lengths and all of the converted grades, and by dividing the total course lengths into the total OLSAS values. Please note: It is not an “average of the averages”.
