Extenuating Circumstances

If a student’s grades were adversely affected by health or personal problems, some universities may take these extenuating circumstances into consideration when making admission decisions. The following are links to each university’s admission policies about extenuating circumstances.

Algoma University

Algoma University reviews all applicants on an individual basis. Students with special/extenuating circumstances are encouraged to contact the Assistant Registrar, Shelley Mitchell, at 705-949-2301, ext. 4220, or email admissions@algomau.ca.

Brock University

Brock University will evaluate each applicant on an individual basis. Students may request an individual review by sending a letter, written by them, directly to Brock University. Any letters and/or supporting documentation should clearly articulate how the special circumstances have impacted their academic performance.

Carleton University

If a student has any special/extenuating circumstances that they feel affected their academic grades and should be taken into consideration when Carleton evaluates their application, they should submit a letter about these special/extenuating circumstances to Carleton’s Admissions Services.

University of Guelph

University of Guelph-Humber

Students applying to the University of Guelph-Humber with special/extenuating circumstances are strongly encouraged to submit a Guelph-Humber Student Profile, which can be completed online.

Applicants with extenuating circumstances should send a brief statement along with any supporting documentation to macdocs@mcmaster.ca, and include “Extenuating Circumstances” and their McMaster Student ID number in the subject line.

Nipissing University

Students are encouraged to fill out Nipissing’s Extenuating Circumstances form. On Nipissing’s website, click “Extenuating Circumstances for Applicants to Undergraduate Programs” (under “Supplemental Forms”) to access the PDF application.

OCAD University

OCAD University reviews all applicants on an individual basis. All applicants with special/extenuating circumstances are encouraged to email the Admissions & Recruitment Office at admissions@ocadu.ca.

Ontario Tech University
(University of Ontario Institute of Technology)

If a student’s grades were affected by exceptional circumstances that they can document, they are encouraged to contact the Office of the Registrar with the appropriate information at 905-721-3190 or futurestudent@ontariotechu.ca.

University of Ottawa

Students who wish to tell Ottawa about their personal journey, such as circumstances or challenges that may have influenced their grades, may fill out the University of Ottawa Declaration of Personal Experience form. This new process is optional for Canadian students who applied to certain direct-entry faculties and wish to strengthen their application.

Saint Paul University

If a student experiences extenuating circumstances that could affect their application for admission, they may email admission@ustpaul.ca, and Saint Paul will determine if their situation can be taken into consideration when evaluating their file.

Queen’s University

If there are any factors that clearly demonstrate significant extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control, which have affected their academic performance in high school at some point during the past 2 years, they should submit a separate letter with supporting documents through the Queen’s Request for Extenuating Circumstances form.

Ryerson University

Ryerson is committed to reviewing each situation deemed reasonable on a case-by-case basis, in keeping with the principles of fairness and equity for all applicants. Students with special or extenuating circumstances can complete Ryerson’s Special Consideration Form if they have not received an admission decision.

University of Toronto

If a student’s academic record has been negatively affected by extenuating circumstances, and their academic performance is below the usual requirements, they will have the opportunity to explain those circumstances. This explanation may be taken into consideration during the admission process.

Trent University

Students whose academic grades have been impacted by extenuating circumstances are encouraged to complete an Extenuating Circumstance Supplemental Application. After a student applies through the OUAC, they can access this application on the myTrent portal, under the “Academics” tab. Each situation will be reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis.

Western University

Western’s Special Consideration Profile provides an opportunity for students to share any extenuating circumstances that have adversely affected their grades with Western’s Admissions Committee.

Brescia University College

Brescia University College will evaluate each applicant on an individual basis. Students should submit a Brescia Application Profile.

Wilfrid Laurier University

If recent or present circumstances have impacted a student’s ability to achieve a strong academic standing, they should email a personal statement to: chooselaurier@wlu.ca. It is the student’s decision to disclose any supporting details.
